Lot Essay

A much smaller grey pottery jar, similarly decorated with narrow bands of incised vertical lines, dated to the Han dynasty, is illustrated in Sekai toji zenshu, Tokyo, 1976, vol.8, no. 68. The narrow ribs of the bands, however, are reminiscent of the wider bands of similar cut ribs on olive-glazed jars of Warring States date, such as those on lot 236 in this sale.
The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no. C299k68 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
