Stanton, Washington, D.C., 8 June 1863. 1 page, folio, ON FINE PARCHMENT, elaborately engraved, green paper seal of the United States at upper left, bold heading at top "The President of the United States," beneath which an American Eagle and the "E Pluribus Unum" motto fly above billowing clouds, a large vignette of crossed flags, cannon and other military paraphernalia at bottom, with small legend "Engraved by J. V .N. and C. H. Throop, Washn. City," accomplished in manuscript, the portions supplied in ink and the signatures slightly pale but quite readable. Lincoln and Stanton appoint Ansel B. Denton a Captain in the Eighteenth Regiment of Infantry.
