A FINE AND RARE CHINESE IMARI EUROPEAN-STYLE CISTERN AND COVER
mid 18th century
Of rectangular shape with single-horned animal-mask fixed-ring handles and a large biscuit seated qilin forming the finial, the front face decorated with tree peony within a underglaze-blue arch issuing the metal tap, reserved on a densely scrolling foliage ground, the sides with similar tree peony, each corner with a moulded trefoil lappet below a design of pierced confronted iron-red and gilt archaistic dragons around the top, a similar design between the four feet reserved on a bois simulé ground, the reverse plain white with a pierced cash roundel and two holes for suspension, and the cover with scrolling lotus above a band of foliage reserved with fish cartouches at the rim, this band repeated on the flat upper rim of the cistern, cracked, some rim restoration
