The vertically ribbed pear-shaped fountain enamelled with two pheasants perched on a prunus branch above a wide band of cell-pattern reserved with two phoenix panels and moulded with a ferocious mask forming the spout, the top formed as two confronted dragon-headed fish, their tails supporting a stylised shell, the domed cover and exterior of the ribbed oval basin similarly enamelled, the basin interior with fish and crustacea amongst water-weeds, basin with rim crack and chip, and some enamels retouched

Lot Essay

A pair of similar fountains, without basins, are in the Museum of Anastácio Gonçalves, Lisbon, illustrated by Maria A. Pinto de Matos, Chinese Export Porcelain, 1996, no.125, p.223. A similar fountain and basin, with fish and crustacea on the fountain in place of the birds in this lot, sold in these Rooms, 15 June 1998, lot 321.
