Of rectangular form, the separate cover with slightly raised central panel painted with the victorious Nader Shah on horseback, his bow raised above his head, cowering and dead opponents around him, in a landscape with his cortege behind, the army in the background, inscribed above and signed Muhammad Baqir, green border with gold meandering vine, the sides with hunting scenes, the figures wearing typical Zand turbans, the red underside with gold floral motifs, the interior of the cover with a central vacant cartouche for a mirror, the gold spandrels with floral motifs, in a deep brown floral border, some restorations, re-lacquered

Lot Essay

The inscription states that theis box was made to the order of Husayn Khan Garrus, the work of Muhammad Baqir.

A lacquer mirror case again commemorating Nader Shah was sold in these Rooms, 12 October 1999, lot 228. The note to that entry discusses the political significance of the subject in the late Zand period.
