Lot Essay

The inscription on the tray is in a much earlier tradition. A penbox signed by Muhammad Ibrahim b. Hajji Yusuf Qumi, made in Isfahan in Rajab 1092 AH July-August 1681 AD has an almost identical rendering (Ivanov, Anatol et al.: Masterpieces of Islamic Art in the Hermitage Museum, Kuwait, 1990, no.113).
