The outer line of the inscription is the bismillah followed by Qur'an sura iii, v.18 and part of v.19. The inner line reads bismillah, this is the grave of al-Hasan, followed by Qur'an sura iii, v.185. No date of death is given.

There is a marble sarcophagus lid in the al-Sabah Collection in Kuwait which has similar kufic and the same koranic verse in the central cartouche also within the same cusped arches at each end (Jenkins, Marilyn: Islamic Art in the Kuwait National Museum, London, 1983, p.74; Seipel, Wilfried: Schätze der Kalifen, Islamische Kunst zur Fatimidenzeit, Vienna, 1998, no.135, pp.164-5 with incorrect caption). It is dated AH 501/1107-8AD, and is attributed to Egypt.
