Lot Essay

The inscription rendered in plain kufic is from the qur'an, sura iii, v.18.

The depth of the interior of the arched opening suggests a mihrab rather than a gravestone. The horseshoe is characteristic of Ghaznavid work of the 11th century and the best known example is the tomb of Mahmud of Ghazni (998-1030).
