Lot Essay

The decoration of this panel is very close to that of the carved stone dado in the palace of Mas'ud III (1099-1115 AD) at Ghazni (Bonbacci, The kufic inscription in Persian verses at the Court of the Royal Palace of Mas'ud III at Ghazni, Rome, 1966). A feature of Ghaznavid decoration is the way in which the elements appear to be in two planes, each crossing over or under the other. This panel may come from a wall revetment or may be the side of a sarcophagus.
