Landscape with a bamboo Grove
Details
Michel Jean Cazabon (1813-1888)
Landscape with a bamboo Grove
signed 'Cazabon' (lower left), with inscription 'Fait pour ma mère Victorine Tane/Basse Pointe Martinique 1850...' on a label attached to the backboard
watercolour
7.7/8 x 9.7/8in. (20 x 25cm.)
The inscription on the reverse is by another hand and presumably records the commission of the present work. Cazabon himself, the son of Franois and Rose Cazabon, was from a 'free-coloured' family whose origins where in the French West Indies and who moved to Trinidad from Martinique after 1789. He did not move to Martinique until 1862, suggesting that the present subject is probably his native Trinidad.
