Browne served on H.M.S. Enterprise on James Clark Ross's first Franklin Search Expedition of 1848-49. Ackermanns published a folio of lithographs after his expedition drawings in 1850. He went on to serve on Austin and Ommanney's Expedition of 1850-51 which found Franklin's winter quarters on Beechey Island and Cape Riley.
