(Vol.II with pp.489-494 somewhat crudely opened, plates facing pp.334 and 350 in vol.II reinforced with adhesive tape at hinge on verso, some light spotting.) Original blue cloth, upper covers and spines gilt, t.e.g. (Extremities slightly bumped, upper cover of vol.I slightly marked).

FIRST EDITION, WITH AN IMPORTANT PROVENANCE FROM A PARTICIPANT IN THE 'WORST JOURNEY IN THE WORLD' TO A MEMBER OF THE NORTHERN PARTY.
Petty Officer George P.Abbott, was one of six members of the Northern Party, led by Commander Victor Campbell, who were landed on Ridley Beach, on the west side of Cape Adare, on 18 February 1911. For the survival of the Northern Party, see the notes to lots 184 and 186-189. In December 1912 Abbott was a member of the party that climbed Mount Erebus.
