Lot Essay
Benjamin Palmer Titter worked in both London and Norwich and is recorded as trading at various addresses in Norwich from 1799-1830. He appears to have specialized in the construction of high quality extending dining-tables of this pattern some of which bear his plaque which varies in its inscription (see G. Beard and C. Gilbert, eds., Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p.896).
A larger extending table bearing his brass plaque was sold by the Art Institute of Chicago, Sotheby's New York, 26-27 January 2000, lot 266 ($68,500). A further example was sold from the collection of the Rt. Hon. the Lord Baillieu at Parkwood, Englefield Green, Surrey, Christie's London, 22 April 1968, lot 277. Another bearing a brass plaque with same inscription as appears on this table was sold Bonham's London, 5 July 1979, lot 31.
