signed GEORG BUTENSOHN BAHRENFELD BEI HAMBURG, stamped D.R.P. 76668, the lacquered-brass frame with marbled decoration rack and pinion adjustment, the bubble level with fine-screw vertical motion, the telescope with sliding draw-tube focusing, the arc with silvered scale and vernier, with ebony handle, two shades and mounting attachment, in the original mahogany case -- 8¾in. These unusual compact instruments could also be used for the taking of azimuth bearings from fixed points, such as coastal headlands or lighthouses. For this purpose they were fixed to a bracket at the Navigator's window on the Zeppelin airships LZ 127 "Graf Zeppelin", LZ 129 "Hindenburg" and LZ 130 "Graf Zeppelin II".
