Lot Essay
General Charles James Merriman, [C.S.I.], was gazetted to the Bombay Engineers as a 2nd Lieutenant in June 1852, having attended Addiscombe. Nearly 40 years later, following a career that included active service in the Persia operations of 1856-57 and a C.S.I. for his work in the famine in the Bombay Presidency between 1876-77, he attained the rank of General. Placed on the Retired List in February 1887, Merriman was latterly Secretary to the Indian Government for the Public Works and Irrigation Department and an Additional Member of the Legislative Council of Bombay. He died January 1906.
