1st Captain Montague Stopford Whitmore was born on Malta in January 1831 and gazetted to the Royal Engineers as a 2nd Lieutenant in October 1847. Advanced to 1st Lieutenant in late 1851 and to 2nd Captain in early 1856, he 'served in the latter part of the Crimean War as Captain of Engineers in the Turkish Contingent at Kertch and Yenikale'. In his obituary in The Royal Engineer Journal, it is stated that he 'commanded the Turkish Corps of Engineers with the rank of Kaimakam (Lieutenant-Colonel), until the force was handed over to the Sultan'. Awarded the Fourth Class of Turkish Order of Medjidjie and Turkish War Medal for these services, he did not qualify for the British Medal. Whitmore, who also served in Newfoundland, Bermuda and the Cape of Good Hope, resigned his Commission as a 1st Captain in January 1868. Tragically, he was hit by a train at Hornsey Station in October 1880, while taking a short cut across the tracks, and died at the Royal Free Hospital of his injuries.
