Lot Essay

Colonel Algernon Campbell Foley was born in January 1853, the second son of Admiral The Hon. F.A.C. Foley, R.N., and appointed a Gentleman Cadet in July 1870. Gazetted to the Royal Engineers as a Lieutenant in May 1872, he first saw active service in the Second Afghan War when he was present at the actions of Khelat-i-Ghilzie and Kandahar. Advanced to Captain in May 1884, Foley went on to serve in 24th Company, R.E. in the Sudan and was present at the action at Gemaizah and Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 11.1.1889 refers). His final stint of active service was in South Africa between 1899-1902, as a Lieutenant-Colonel, during which period he was present at the actions of Vet River, Zand River, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill and Belfast and again Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 10.9.1901 refers). Foley retired in October 1904 and died at Westminster in March 1926.
