The Order of Military Merit was instituted by King Louis XV on 10.13.1759 as an award to Protestant Officers for military valour or distinguished service. It was therefore the "Protestant" equivalent of the "Catholic" Order of St. Louis. The numbers awarded at any period were small compared to those of the Order of St. Louis.
