The present model is based on Gérôme's painting Phryne before the Tribunal (Kunsthale, Hamburg) which was exhibited in the Salon of 1861. Gérôme's father-in-law, Goupil, commissioned Falguiére to make a model after the central figure in the painting and subsequently edited the work in bronze.
