A COPTIC WOODEN 'CARDING' COMB
6TH-7TH CENTURY A.D.
The heavy comb in three sections joined by dowel pins, with single handle from central section, decorated with incised circle and dot motif, 8.5/8 in. (22 cm.) wide; a bone relief carving, the curved section decorated with a trailing grape vine, pierced twice for attachment, mounted, 5th Century A.D., 4¾ in. (12.1 cm.) long; an inscribed wooden 'mummy' label, the rectangular panel carved with bold letters reading "Soter Antinoeus", drilled with hole for attachment, mounted, probably circa 7th Century A.D., 4.3/8 x 2½ in. (11.3 x 6.3 cm.); and a papyrus fragment written in Sahidic dialect, inscribed with eight lines on one side and six on the other in a large angular uncial, mounted under perspex, circa 550-650 A.D., 3¾ in. (9.5 cm.) high max. (4)
