Lot Essay

Oral tradition states this watercolor came from Lancaster County. The 1830 Pennsylvania Census shows two John Steiner/Stiners living in Lancaster County, one in Elizabeth Township and the other in Brecknock. Both Steiner/Stiners were in their mid-30s at the time of the census, and both were married with several children, most under the age of 10. Accordingly, between the two men, the maker of this watercolor remains unknown. It may be extrapolated however, from available information that the maker of this watercolor was probably not a student, and that its subject matter was more whimsical in nature than factual or a recollection of a past avocation.
