The tanker Halcyon the Great was built for the British-owned Court Line by A/B Götaverken at Gothenburg (Sweden) in 1971. Registered in London at 113,543 tons gross (90,579 net and 226,635 deadweight), she measured 1,090 feet in length (including her bulbous bow) with a 149½ foot beam and was constructed with one main deck and a raised foredeck. Conventionally designed with her machinery situated aft, she was powered by two high pressure steam turbines with double reduction gearing manufactured by her builders and had a service speed of 16 knots. Her tanks had a total liquid capacity of fractionally under 10 million cubic metres separated by eight bulkheads and she carried two derricks each capable of lifting 15 tonnes and a further derrick to take 3 tonnes.
