Dubbels worked in Amsterdam as a painter of seascapes and winter and moonlit landscapes. From circa 1650 to 1653 he was employed in the studio of Simon de Vlieger, where he developed close artistic contacts with Jan van de Cappelle and Willem van de Velde II. He worked in the studio of Willem van de Velde I until 1672-3 when the van de Veldes emigrated to England. The present picture appears to be datable to circa 1680. Examples of his work are in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich and the National Gallery, London.
