Lot Essay

Jacob Knyff was born in Haarlem in 1639 and was the son of the painter Wouter Knyff (c.1607-c.1693) and brother of Willem (1646-1684) and Leonard Knyff (1650-1721). Little is known of his early life until 1670 when he is recorded as having a studio in Paris. In 1672 he moved to London and was to remain there until his death in 1681. This rare pair of works by Knyff depict two important seventeenth century strongholds.
