Provenance: Wedderen (near Dlmen, Westphalia), Carthusians: binding, inscription dated 1535 on a1r (Liber carthusiensium prope Dulmaniam Anno 1535) -- 17th-century shelf-mark "C83" on a1r -- Brooklyn Public Library: bookplate.
Johann Koelhoff the Elder, of Lbeck, may have learned printing from Wendelin of Speier, as his earliest type closely imitated a Venetian model. Settling in Cologne, Koelhoff became a wool merchant, as well as a printer, publisher and bookseller. His production consisted mostly of theological texts in Latin, and spanned the years 1472-1493. In 1484 or 1485 he completed and marketed a two-volume edition of the works of St. Bonaventure which had been begun by Bartholomaeus Unckel; in 1486 he published this one-volume edition of his own. The complete contents of the present edition, with the current attributions for works spuriously credited to Bonaventure, is given in CIBN.
Another Dlmen binding by H.G. was recorded by E.P. Goldschmidt, Gothic & Renaissance Bookbindings (London 1928), no. 165, on a book printed in 1536; still another, on an edition of Boethius printed in 1488, was in the Doheny collection (Doheny I, lot 31).
