Collation: [16; 2-710.8 88 910 10-118 12-1310 14-158 1610 178 1810 19-208 2110 228 2310 246 2510 26-288 2910 308 3110] (1/1 blank, 1/2r table; 2/1r text, 25/1r sermon 85, 31/10v blank). 269 leaves (of 270, without the first blank). 60 lines and headline, double column. Types: 2:120G (headings) and 1:93aG (text). One- to eight-line initial spaces. Rubricated with red Lombard initials, capital strokes, paragraph signs and underlines. 29/1-2 cancelled and replaced on stubs, appearing as a separate four-leaf quire before the remainder of 29. (Intermittent dampstaining, occasional stains and smudges, ca. 6 leaves strengthened at inner margin.)
Binding: contemporary South-German blind-tooled pigskin spine over bare wooden reverse-bevelled boards (some small wormholes, small tear to headcap): the sides tooled in vertical panels with three rolls, a scrolling floral pattern, foliage and flowers, and plaited knotwork; evidence of two clasps; original paper label on front cover.
Provenance: extensive contemporary marginalia in red and brown ink -- "Inc. dpl. 4296" pencilled inside front cover.
One of the earliest books produced by the prototypographer of Reutlingen. Michael Greyff, who probably learned printing in Strassburg, established his shop in Reutlingen ca. 1476 and printed there until the end of the fifteenth century. His first types, the ones used in this book, were closely related to types used in Strassburg. Greyff, who was probably a native of Reutlingen, was the father of Sebastian Gryphius, the celebrated Lyonnese printer of the sixteenth century.
Although the British Museum acquired a copy of this edition in July 1867, the description of it was accidentally omitted from part II of BMC. The collations given by BSB-Ink. and Polain call for a final quire in nine leaves, but the present copy has a regular quire 31 of ten leaves, all printed.
