Chancery 4o (198 x 143 mm). Collation: a8 (a1r title, a1v text, a8r colophon, a8v blank). 8 leaves. 42 lines, 2 columns. Types: 2:115G (title), 5:87aG (colophon and headings), 4:71(69)G (text). Three- to five-line initial spaces, with printed guide-letters. Partially rubricated with red Lombard initials and underlines. (Unobtrusive dampstains to blank margins, mends to two blank margins, one small wormhole through textblock touching one or two letters on each page.) Modern vellum (padded with modern paper).
Provenance: contemporary marginalia -- twelve lines of Latin verse written in a contemporary hand on a1r.
This thirteenth-century Italian moral treatise on the art of when to speak and when to be silent was printed numerous times in the fifteenth century. According to the colophon, the author, who was a judge and governor of Gavardo, wrote the work for the instruction of his sons. For this edition, as for his other small quartos, Kunne employed unwatermarked paper produced at the local paper mill.
