AN IMPORTANT ITALIAN SILVER AND PARCEL GILT FILIGREE SPICE CONTAINER, IN THE GOTHIC MANNER.
Apparently unmarked, probably Venice or Rome first half 17th Century
On shaped circular open worked foliate base, the lobed raised stem applied with parcel gilt floral plaques, surmounted by ball knob with corded parcel-gilt rim, the spreading cylindrical tapering detachable body and steeple applied with similary rectangular and triangular parcel-gilt panels, each rectangular panel alternated by double twisted and pine-cone pinnacle, surmounted by three gothic stylized foliate ornaments, various corded bands, filigree flower finial with parcel-gilt leaves

This Spice Container has been handed down for several generations within the illustrious D'Ancona family, known to have originated in Pesaro and to have prospered throughout Italy as bankers. Most recently in the possession of Judith D'Ancona, who lent this Spice Container to the Israel Museum in 1981.
