Sir Rodger Casement was actually the grandson of Sir William Casement's (the sitter's father) first cousin Hugh and not as stated in the catalogue. The family lived in Larne, Co. Antrim.

Lot Essay

The sitter was the son of General Sir William Casement, great-uncle of Sir Rodger Casement, who was executed for his involvement in the Easter Rising of 1916, having attempted to procure weapons for the rebellion from Germany.
