Lot Essay

An extensive group of images from this series including a range of subjects at the forts, in Peking and of Hong Kong. These prints, without negative numbers, would appear to have been printed in situ from the original negatives rather than from copy negatives by Henry Hering in London. See Harris, Of Battle and Beauty for further information on this series and on the historical background to events leading to the declaration of war by England and France on China on April 8, 1860.
