Paris 1780-1789, with the export discharge mark of Henry Clavel, other marks indistinct, the miniature by Carlo Carloni, indistinctly signed, circa 1820
Circular gold-mounted black composition box, the independent cover set with an oval miniature of Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany wearing a white uniform with the jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the sash and breast-star of the Order of St Joseph of Tuscany and the badge of the Order of St Stephen of Tuscany, within a two-colour gold frame bordered with stylised acanthus, with similar gold mounts, the sides and base with plain gold mounts

Lot Essay

Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1797-1870), third child of Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Tuscany and his first wife Maria Luisa of Bourbon-Naples. He was married to Princess Anna Maria of Saxony in 1817 and succeeded his father in 1824. He abdicated in 1859 in favour of his son. He was bestowed with the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1810; he is wearing the Orders of St Stephen and St Joseph which were re-established by the sitter's father in 1817.
