probably Geneva, second half of the 19th century, maker's mark 'APD', with prestige marks resembling to the charge mark of Henry Clavel, the miniature French School, circa 1680/1700
Large oval box, the cover, side and base panels with translucent crimson enamel on an engine-turned horizontal wavy ground, the cover centred with an oval Louis XIV period miniature under glass of a gentleman wearing a breastplate over a gold embroidered blue coat, red bow and white lace cravat, long curling powdered wig, within a rose-cut diamond mount, the borders with broad sablé bands cast with fleurs-de-lys in oval reserves, between translucent green enamelled leaves and opalescent berries, the side panels applied with oval reserves chased with trophies of Love, Gardening, Music and Harvest in four-colour gold hung from laurel festoons, the side pilasters adorned with translucent blue enamelled vases, the base centred with an oval glazed medallion displaying the pierced mirrored gilt foliate initials 'L' the Royal French crown above, on a beige silk ground
