The present hardstone, called the 'Starling Eyes Stone', was popular in Dresden at the time of Johann Christian Neuber (see Christie's, Geneva, 14 November 1995, lot 118).

A CONTINENTAL JEWELLLED AND ENAMELLED HARDSTONE AND GOLD CAGEWORK SNUFF-BOX SET WITH AN ENAMEL MINIATURE
possibly German or Swiss, late 19th century
Oval box, the cover, sides and base set with panels of hardstone consisting of petrified wood, the gold cagework mounts enamelled in opaque white and set with diamonds and rose-cut diamonds, the cover centred with an oval enamel plaque painted with Cupid and a young lady reading a letter inscribed 'Souffrez qu[e] l'amour vous blesse et quit-', within a diamond and white enamel border
