The jewelled initials are those of the French General Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte (1763-1844) who was elected successor to the childless King Charles XIII of Sweden in 1810. Bernadotte and his wife Désirée Clary ruled as King Carl XIV Johan and Queen Desideria from 1818 to 1844 and the reigning monarchs of Sweden, Norway and Belgium are their direct descendants.
In the Treaty of Kiel (1814), King Frederick VI of Denmark was obliged to abandon his traditional rights on the throne of Norway in favour of Bernadotte, then Crown Prince of Sweden. Nevertheless, the Norwegians rebelled against this decision and elected Charles VIII of Denmark as King of Norway which led to the abdication of the Swedish ruler as King of Norway and to war between Norway and Sweden. As outlined in the joined document, dated Oslo, 26 February 1815, the present box was bestowed upon Consul *** for his participation as a Deputy to the Norwegian Parliament (Storthing) during the nomination of Charles XIII of Sweden as King of Norway.
