Lot Essay

The design for these chairs with their acanthus-decorated splats and legs hung with bell-husks, is taken almost directly from a design published in A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, London, 3rd ed., 1794, pl. 5 of chairs.
