Lot Essay

The tripartite form of this wardrobe with a clothes-press flanked by narrow cupboards, was called a 'Ladies Wardrobe' when one was supplied by Gillows of London and Lancaster to Earl Manvers in August 1820 (Estimate Sketch Book, job no. 3036, Westminster Library MSS). The Manvers wardrobe remained at Thorsby Hall, Nottinghamshire until being sold in Sotheby's house sale, 1-2 June 1989, lot 457L. Another wardrobe of the same form was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 17 November 1995, lot 152.
