AN OKITENUGUI KABUTO [HELMET]
Momoyama Period (Late 16th Century)
The russet-iron bowl of shallow form, the cap plate turning up in three places at the back and edged with soft metal fukurin [edging] as is the brow-plate with heavy embossed eyebrows, the rivets attaching the cap-plate to vertical plates with large heads, a row of five spikes running down the centre and a further three on either side of the bowl, a bonji [Sanskrit character] embossed on the back, the forecrest a gilt wood rectangular block inscribed in black lacquer with an invocation to the war god (Namu Hachiman Dai Bosatsu), simple five-tier Hineno-jikoro [close-fitting neck-guard] black- lacquered and with dark green kebiki-odoshi [close-spaced lacing]
