A RED-LACQUERED TACHI DO GUSOKU ARMOUR
Mid-Edo Period (Late 18th Century)
Comprising a sixty-two plate suji-bachi [ridged bowl], black-lacquered and with a six-tier mixed metal tehen-kanamono [fitting in the top of the bowl], maedate [forecrest] of copper kuwagata [horns] and a small gilt wood shishi [lion], five-tier kiritsuke-kozane Hineno- jikoro [close-fitting neck-guard of imitation lamellae] lacquered red and laced with dark blue kebiki- odoshi [close-spaced lacing], the lower edge trimmed with bear fur; russet-lacquered iron mask in typical Nara style with a stiff hair moustache and a pronounced beard and matching yodarekake [throat- defence]; two-piece do [cuirass] with dark blue close-spaced lacing over red-lacquered iron kiritsuke-kozane; leather kusazuri [tassets] trimmed with bear fur; red-lacquered iron kosode [small shoulder-guards] and shino-gote [sleeves]; leather karutagane-haidate [thigh-guards made up of rectangular plates]; iron shino-suneate [shin-guards]; gold-lacquered mon [crest] on the fukigaeshi [turnbacks] repeated on the mune-ita [upper chest]; together with an armour box
