A COMPOSITE ARMOUR
Mid-Edo Period (18th/19th Century)
Comprising a black lacquer iron eboshi-nari [court-cap shape] helmet, the mabisashi [peak] embossed with eyebrows and fitted with a five-tier black-lacquered iron itamono jikoro [neck-guard made of solid plates], associated forecrest of a gilt-copper rabbit amidst copper waves, russet-lacquered iron Nara-style mask; good quality do [cuirass] in five sections of russet-lacquered iron plates, the upper section of the front laced in bands of white and red, the rest of the surface with hishinui [cross-knots] in alternating white and red; the back with an imitation sakaita [reverse plate]; hinged watagami [shoulder straps]; kusazuri [tassets] of russet-lacquered leather with dark blue close-spaced lacing; black-lacquered iron chu-sode [medium-sized shoulder-guards] with dark blue lacing; russet-lacquered iron Oda-gote [sleeves], ikada haidate [thigh-guards] and Shino suneate [shin-guards]
