A NIMAI-TACHIDO TOSEI-GUSOKU ARMOUR
Late Edo Period (19th Century)
Comprising a tall well-formed eboshi-nari-kabuto [court cap-shaped helmet] in russet-lacquered iron, the central ridge gold-lacquered, to the front a gold-lacquered wood maedate [forecrest] representing knotted fabric; russet-lacquered iron kiritsuke-kozane Hineno-jikoro [close-fitting neck-guard made up of imitation lamallae], the fukigaeshi [turnbacks] with gold-lacquered mon [crest]; black-lacquered iron mask with hair moustache and chin-tuft and three-tier yodarekake [throat-guard]; russet-lacquered iron kosode [small shoulder-guards]; do [cuirass] in two pieces of iron kiritsuke-kozane [imitation lamellae] with kusazuri [tassets] in leather; good quality russet-iron oda-gote [sleeves], russet-iron karutagane-haidate [thigh-guards made up of rectangular plates] and gold-lacquered iron shino-suneate [shin-guards]; the whole armour with white kebiki-odoshi [close-spaced lacing] with mauve hishinui [cross-knots] to lower plates, some restoration; together with an old armour box with a leather cover decorated with a gold-lacquered mon [crest] and a modern armour box, a collapsible armour stand and a helmet stand
