Engraved architectural and allegorical title with pasted-down letterpress overslip, 64 engraved maps: 58 maps of Italy and 4 maps of Greece (one bird's-eye view), consisting of 58 full sheets, one half-sheet and 3 half-page maps; plus two supplementary full-sheet maps of Scotland and Ireland, most maps with historiated or armorial cartouches, TITLE AND MAPS FULLY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, THE TITLE HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD. Text and maps on guards throughout. (About 15 mapsheets with minor creasing along guards or in gutters, dampstaining to lower gutter margins throughout, just touching image in some of the last 50 maps, a few text leaves torn along guard.) Contemporary Dutch vellum over pasteboard, sides stamped with corner- and center-piece design, flat spine gilt in compartments, gilt edges. (Minor soiling, lacking pair of fore-edge ties, front pastedown detaching slightly.)

FIRST EDITION IN DUTCH of Part III of Blaeu's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, devoted mainly to Italy. This copy is from a variant issue, not recorded by Koeman, without the two further supplementary maps of England included in his edition Bl 38B, and with a section title to the Scotland-Ireland section listing those countries only (and not England). The register is that of Bl 38A, listing only the 62 maps of Italy and Greece.
