HENRY VIII (1491-1547), King of England. Document signed ("Henry," followed by royal sign-manual) as King of England, addressed to "the Chambrelain of our Exchequer that now be," "Richemounte" [Richmond], 2 October 1509. 1 page, oblong (137 x 286 mm.), ON FINE PARCHMENT, written in a clear English court hand, thin tear at center left catching a few letters text, matted with a portrait and framed.
AN EXTREMELY EARLY DOCUMENT OF THE TUDOR KING. Six months after ascending to the throne at age eighteen, Henry VIII issues a warrant for the annual payment of £20 to Sir Richard Neville (1468-1530): "...Where as we of our grace especial have given and granted unto our trusty and well-beloved s[er]vant Sr. Richard Nevil [sic] knight by our orders patent under our great seal bearing date [23 September] last past an annuity of £ 20 sterling to be...yearly paid at the receipt of our Exchequer by your hand during our pleasure at the feast of Saint Michel the archangel and after...by the said orders patent it may appear more at large..." A prominent courtier, Neville signed the petition in 1530 to Pope Clement VII urging him to hasten his decision on Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon. This is the earliest document of Henry VIII to be offered at auction since at least 1975.
