Black letter, double-column, xylographic title printed in red between two parts of large woodcut block printed in black and red, woodcut of a battle on z6v, 6 smaller woodcuts in text, numerous 10-line and smaller woodcut initials. (Lacks terminal colophon leaf, title with loss in upper margin, with partial loss of ownership inscription, some short tears, soiling, worming and dampstaining throughout, affecting text block.) Later panelled calf (rebacked). Provenance: William Herbert (contemporary ownership signature on title; see condition note above); early marginalia; George Rose (1882-1873), English judge and first chairman of the Law Life Insurance Society (armorial bookplate).

Third edition of one of the most important early pieces of English historical prose. This edition was translated by John de Trevisa (1326-1412), Vicar of Berkeley, and is the first edition to use these illustrations. Grolier Langland to Wither 144; Pforzheimer 490; STC 13440.
