HISTORICAL MISCELLANY. Capitoli di pace tra Spagna et Francia con altre scritture . [V.p., mostly Naples, Rome and Lecce, ca. 1659-1683]. 17 printed items, as below, bound together in a contemporary stiff paper wrapper. (Intermittent light foxing, occasional stains, old folds to several items, occasional minor fraying to edges or folds, spine of wrapper separating at fold and torn with small loss at foot.)
This collection of printed pamphlets, broadsides, and other ephemera must have been assembled soon after 1683, the date of the latest item in it, by someone living in Italy, probably in Naples or Lecce. The anonymous collector was obviously interested in political events, popular culture, religious sentiment and ecclesiastical politics, and the collection presents a vivid snapshot of these aspects of life in southern Italy ca. 1683. The works included relate mostly to current Italian history, especially events in Rome and Naples, from the 1650s through the early 1680s, but also refer to the French wars of the 1650s and 1660s, and the defeat of the Turks before Vienna in 1683. Several broadsides represent popular reactions to events such as the death of a famous French general, miracles performed by a saint at Lecce, and the appearance of a comet over Naples in 1680. The collection includes the items listed below. None of them are recorded in RLIN and only items 1 and 4 are recorded in OCLC.
1. Tratado de paz entre esta corona y la de Francia: ajustado por el excelentissimo senor Don Luis Mendez de Haro y Guzman y por le eminentissimo senor cardenal Iulio Mazarini. Madrid: Domingo Garçia Morras; Naples: Egidio Longo, 1660. 2o. Woodcut armorial device. Spanish text of the treaty which ended twenty years of warfare between France and Spain by establishing the Peace of the Pyranees. Negotiated on the French side by Cardinal Mazarin acting on behalf of Louis XIV, this treaty marked the beginning of Spain's decline as a world power.

The Turkish defeat before Vienna on 12 September 1683 marked the beginning of the Ottoman withdrawal from Central Europe and the beginning of the decline of the Ottoman Empire. Esztergom and Nové Zámky, both in Hungary, were regained by Christian forces in October 1683 and August 1685 respectively.
