Lot Essay

Several similar globes were offered in the above sale in these rooms on 26th November 1997, as Lots 19-25. Following the Lot descriptions are several hypotheses regarding attribution of these pieces and the origin of the initials M.P.S., which possibly stand for Marke Polar Sterne. It is likely that the M.P.S. globes were either produced by Nuremburg maker Carl Bauer (1780-1857), or at least in conjunction with his workshop, as they exhibit several similarities in the typography and cartography, and are often to be found with identical boxes and accompanying leaflets entitled The EARTH and its Inhabitants.
