Typed letter in French on Papal headed paper, signed 'Paulus P P. VI', from the Vatican, 1 December 1966, 2pp, 4°, to the Iranian Ambassador, recognising the esteem in which the Shah, Mohammad Reza
Pahlavi, held his predecessors, Popes Pius XII and John XIII. He praises the Shah for respecting the beliefs of catholics in his country and encouraging education and literacy. The Pope is proud to receive greetings from his sovereign and assures him of his support with blessings (folded once), within a gilt-embossed red calf folder.

Lot Essay

Created Pope in 1963 after the death of John XXIII, Paul VI travelled widely and initiated important advances in the move towards Christian unity.
