Lot Essay

For Tokoku, see lot no. 77. This is a particularly interesting example of carving based on the work of the great Meiji-period painter Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-89); for a painting by Kyosai of Kannon see Timothy Clark, Demon of Painting: The Art of Kawanabe Kyosai (British Museum, London, 1993), cat. no. 39.
