Lot Essay

Compiled in 1235 by Fujiwara Teika (1162-1241), the Hyakunin isshu [One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets] includes some of the best-known poems in the Japanese language. It was immensely popular during the Edo period, when the poems formed the basis of shell-matching- and card-games.
