Lot Essay

The dancers are based on an illustration to Chapter 7, Momiji no ga [Autumn Celebration], of the great 11th-century novel Genji monogatari [The Tale of Genji]; one of the figures is Prince Genji himself. Rissai, an imitator of Ogawa Haritsu was active in the mid-19th century; see E.A. Wrangham, The Index of Inro Artists (Harehope, Northumberland, 1995), p. 211.
