Although Soetsu (see also lot 99) lived from 1660 to about 1745, a number of inro with his signature, decorated in Rinpa style, are believed to be of somewhat later date; the signature on the side refers to the unidentified painter from whom the design was taken. See E.A. Wrangham, The Index of Inro Artists (Harehope, Northumberland, 1995), pp. 269-270.
